The Walpurgis monastery in Walpernholz is a desert in the corridor of the city of Arnstadt in Thuringia .

location

About two kilometers southeast of the city of Arnstadt on the Walpernberg, 400 meters above sea level, is the desolation of the Walpurgis Monastery. It is the most south-westerly position of the water channel. This ridge separates the area around the Käfernburg from the Geratal .

history

The Walpurgis Monastery was first mentioned in a document in 1196. In 1307 and 1309 the monastery was moved to Arnstadt and the buildings were demolished. Until 1533 the faithful could still hold services in a chapel .

Remains of the monastery mentioned in 1196 were suspected to be on the desert area, and the remains of walls were exposed several times during forest work. In 1976 members of the Thuringian History Association began to uncover the outlines of a Benedictine nunnery on the desolate area . The remains of a previous building were even found there. They were the foundations of a church apse . In 1988 and 1993 a cistern and the outline of the monastery church were exposed.

Conclusion

  • The remains of the monastery lead to the early days of Christianization in Thuringia
  • At the strategic height in front of the monastery there was a rampart to protect the people
  • Today the square serves as a ground monument for the development phase at that time
