history

The Kevernburg was probably built around the turn of the millennium and in its early days served to protect the old trade and military route that led through the Ohragrund over the Oberhofer Pass. The first written mention of the castle is on November 8th 1141 with Sizzo III. von Kevernburg as a witness. The castle changed hands several times through pledges, mortgages and inheritance divisions. In its heyday, the castle was the ancestral seat of the Counts of Kevernburg and the seat of government of the County of Kevernburg. The family died out in 1365. The Kefernburg taverns , a spin-off of the Vargula taverns, served as ministerials at the castle.

The rule was sold on May 29th, 1387 to Landgrave Balthasar of Thuringia . On July 15, 1394, he pledged the palace and rule of Kevernburg to his younger brother Wilhelm. After the Landgraves of Thuringia died out in 1446, the areas came to close relatives of the Kevernburg family, the Counts of Schwarzburg .

After the Reformation it was only used to house various authorities. The castle began to fall apart during the Thirty Years' War . Stones, bricks and wooden structures from the old fortresses were used by the residents of the surrounding towns to build houses and streets. Some of the building materials were also used in Neideck Castle in Arnstadt .

Today only a rampart from the former castle still exists. A pictorial representation of the castle from ancient times is no longer available.
