Werner Mägdefrau (born January 24, 1931 in Schwarza ) is a German historian specializing in the history of Thuringia .

Life

Werner Mägdefrau studied history, German literature and education at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena from 1949 to 1953 . From 1954 he was a research assistant there, and in 1955 with the work "The conception of the Middle Ages in the Historical Yearbook of the Gorres-Gesellschaft " Dr. phil. PhD. After working as a lecturer in the history of the Middle Ages and regional history at the University of Jena since 1969, he completed his habilitation there in 1971 with the thesis “Revolutionary communal movements and late medieval civil struggles in the cities of the Thuringian Tri-City Association . A contribution to the regional history of Thuringia and to the development of the feudal German urban system ” .

From 1974 he taught and researched there as a full professor for the history of the Middle Ages until his retirement in 1991. A focus of his research is the regional history of Thuringia, whereby his works are partly influenced by the standpoint of historical materialism represented in the GDR .
