Thuringian three-city federation

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Thuringian three- city federation was a medieval city federation between the three most powerful cities in the region of Thuringia , namely the two free imperial cities Nordhausen and Mühlhausen as well as today's state capital Erfurt , which at that time formally belonged to the archbishopric of Mainz , but due to its economic wealth and influence similar privileges as enjoyed a free imperial city.

The federation was founded in 1304/06, renewed in 1309 and existed until 1481. The aim of the federal partners was to maintain their independence from the Wettin states (Saxony), but also from the Archbishop of Mainz. Economic interests were also represented jointly. All three cities were also members of the Hanseatic League .
