Walter Krienitz (born November 6, 1876 in Halberstadt ; † November 14, 1943 there ) was a German physician who was one of the first to describe bacteria in the human stomach.

Life

Walter Krienitz studied medicine from 1896 to 1902 at the universities of Würzburg, Berlin and Halle / Saale. On April 4, 1902, he obtained his license to practice medicine and received his doctorate in 1903 in Halle / Saale. From 1906 to 1928 Krienitz worked in a private clinic for stomach, intestinal and metabolic diseases in Halberstadt. In the mid-1920s, he developed severe encephalitis . Due to an increasing right hemiplegia , he had to quit his medical practice in 1928.

In terms of medical history, Walter Krienitz is one of the first doctors to describe gastric bacteria in humans. A memorial plaque in Halberstadt's Burchardi monastery has been commemorating this since the beginning of 2019. In 2005, almost 90 years after this publication, the Nobel Prize in Medicine and Physiology for the discovery of Helicobacter pylori was awarded to B. J. Marshall and J. R. Warren from Australia.

Since 2007 the Walter Krienitz Association for the Promotion of Medicine has existed in memory of Walter Krienitz . V.
