Walther Otto Müller

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Walther Otto Müller , also Otto Müller , (born June 20, 1833 ; † July 17, 1887 in Gera ) was a German art gardener and botanist with the author's abbreviation WOMüll.

His observations and collecting activities focused on the region around Gera with a focus on cryptogams , in particular bryology (moss) and lichenology (lichens). He collected plants and plant parts and sold them in the form of herbaria .

There is a risk of confusion with:

  • the illustrator (watercolor, graphic) and lithographer for botanical reference works Walther Müller and Wilhelm Walter Müller , who worked in Gera between 1870 and 1919, with the signature 'WM' or 'WMüller'.
  • Georg Ferdinand Otto Müller in Berlin (1837-1917), who researched the owner of the publishing house, botanist and phycologist Georg Ferdinand Otto Müller in Berlin (1837-1917), with taxonomy author names O. Müller or Otto Müller or author abbreviation O. Rubbish. .
  • the German biologist Dr.Dr. 1886 researching plant physiology (movement of plants like tendrils) in Breslau. Otto Mueller.

Life

In the beginning he only called himself Otto, because at that time and in the region the middle name was more important than the first name. Müller researched the regional flora and often only published the species names in a taxonomic tree structure with information on localities and growing conditions. Together with R. Schmidt he wrote about the entire flora in his region. Later, Müller specialized in cryptogams, and there in particular on lichens and mosses, on which he wrote in detail. He was the editor of herbaria of dried plants, lichens and mosses, which he sold through publishers. The Gera region was relatively species-rich in the middle of the 19th century, because the topography allowed plants from the flatlands as well as species from mountainous areas. Müller supported the national works of other authors by passing on their observations. For his later works he drew illustrations which he had lithographed and printed by lithographic institutions. Officially, he was registered as Otto Müller with the main occupation "art gardener", which corresponds to a garden and landscape gardener today. He lived in the same address as the print shop owner Hermann Müller and his business.
