While the inscription is primarily used for documentary and identification purposes, the wall slogan is more programmatic and appellative and is often used in monotheistic religions.

Both Jewish and Islamic buildings decorate their interiors with religious wall slogans and dispense with murals.

The origins of the wall slogan lie in the conflict between dualistic-religious circles around the image (see iconoclasm ). During the Reformation, the Calvinist-Reformed movement in particular cultivated the wall saying, rejecting religious images.

Wall slogans were important for publishing from the second half of the 19th century to the 20th century; Produced in large quantities, they formed an important part of popular wall decorations.

Wall sayings range from quotes from the Bible to simple proverbs to quotes from poets. Drinking and key slogans served as festive decorations, for example for club parties, or were hung in restaurants. In addition, wall slogans with commands to behave in the dining room were widespread in the pub image. Sayings with moralizing content could serve as house blessings .

Early wall slogans were made as lithographs or chromolithographs , later multicolored rasterized prints were added. Both simple poster-like, framed or unframed sheets as well as complexly assembled pictures were possible. The background of the wall slogans was often interchangeable so that it could be used for several slogans.

In the middle class, wall slogans fell out of fashion at the beginning of the 20th century, while they only found their way into rural households and workers' apartments.
