Helmut Koziol

Helmut Koziol (born April 7, 1940 in Vienna ) is a retired Austrian lawyer and professor of civil law at the University of Vienna .

Origin and education

Helmut Koziol was born as the son of the university professor Herbert Koziol and his wife Maria. He attended high school in Graz and then began studying law at the Karl-Franzens-University of Graz , which he 1963 with the graduation to the Dr. jur. completed.

Professional career

After completing his studies, Koziol began his academic career as an assistant for private law with Franz Bydlinski at the University of Bonn , where he worked until 1967. He then came to the University of Vienna in June 1967 and worked as a university lecturer at the Institute for Civil Law. In December 1967 he moved to the Johannes Kepler University in Linz , where he worked as a professor of private law until 1970, when he returned to Vienna in 1970, where he then took on a chair in civil law at the university, which he held until 2000 . In addition, Koziol was visiting professor at the University of South Africa , the Hebrew University of Jerusalem , University College London and universities in Japan and South Korea as well as visiting professor at the Renmin Law School in Beijing .

In addition to his scientific work, Helmut Koziol was and is also active in practice. Since 1986 he has been co-editor of the scientific journal Bank-Archiv (ÖBA). He is a member of the board of the Austrian Banking Society. He is also co-editor of the German journal for European private law and a member of the civil law teachers' association . Koziol is one of the founders of the European Group on Tort Law. Furthermore, Helmut Koziol is the Executive Director of the European Center for Damage Compensation and Insurance Law (ECTIL). Until the end of 2008 he was director, since then he has been deputy director of the Institute for European Damage Law of the Austrian Academy of Sciences , of which he is a real member.

In April 2007, Koziol became known to the general public when he prepared an opinion for Defense Minister Norbert Darabos on the legal options regarding an exit from the contract concluded with EADS for 18 Eurofighter fighter aircraft .

In addition to numerous other publications, Koziol is the author of the standard work on Austrian liability law and (together with Rudolf Welser ) the founder and co-author of a widespread outline of Austrian civil law ("Koziol / Welser", continued by different authors from the 12th edition) .
