Coats of arms denotes a form of organization of the Polish nobility. Several families were united under one coat of arms, but unlike Scottish clans, consanguinity was not a requirement.

Members of the coat of arms communities could only be aristocrats, although a family could also belong to several coat of arms communities, for example the princes Radziwiłł .

The Polish word for coat of arms , “Herb”, means heritage. The preservation of the heritage (property) was the main goal of the Polish coat of arms community.

Coat groups were also among German knightly families, such as the crest group Hirsch about chess in Pomerania or the scissors arms ( Schernberg , from Scherenberg , Marshal , of Nordhausen , Giech ) in Thuringia and Franconia.
