Was in Middle Earth

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

War in Middle Earth is a real-time strategy game for the computer systems Sinclair ZX Spectrum , Commodore 64 , Amstrad CPC , MS-DOS , Commodore Amiga , Apple IIgs , and Atari ST . It wasdeveloped and publishedin 1988 by the Australian company Melbourne House and is based on the plot of the novel The Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkien .

The game combines scenarios with large army contingents and smaller character-oriented game levels. All actions take place simultaneously in the game world, whereby the player can view all locations on an overview map or locally. Individual characters can also be pursued in major battles in which they either survive or die - Gandalf alone is able to defeat a few hundred orcs . Smaller battles with less than 100 participating units are displayed at the local level, while larger battles are only displayed numerically. At the local level, the characters can collect items and talk to friendly, computer-controlled non - player characters (such as Radagast or Tom Bombadil ).

Press review

Was in Middle Earth was reviewed in 1989 in the American magazine Dragon , which specializes in Dungeons and Dragons and related games. The authors gave it three out of five stars as a rating. Computer Gaming World published an ambivalent review, which pointed out that although the game faithfully reproduces the events of the novel, it lacks an independent strategy and the game always behaves very similarly on repeated runs.
