Wardananz Hraparak ( Armenian Վարդանանց Հրապարակ , formerly: Majisjan Apstambutjan hraparak, Armenian Մայիսյան Ապստամբության հրապարակ , also: Vartanants Hraparak , Vardanants Square , German: Wardananz Platz ) is the large central square in Gyumri , Armenia .

geography

The rectangular square has a side length of 280 by 140 meters. It is bordered by Abovyan Street (w), Gai Street (n), Shahumyan Street (o) and Vahan Cheraz Street (s).

Monument to the Battle of Avarayr .

Several fountains adorn the square along with a memorial to the Battle of Avarayr in the center. The monument was erected in 2008. It historically depicts Armenian leaders of the campaign against the Sassanid Empire . The equestrian statue of Vartan Mamikonian is the central point of the monument. The other four statues represent the Catholicos Hovsep I of Armenia , Ghevond Yerets , Vardan Mamikonjan's mother Sahakanoush and the prince Arshavir II. Kamsarakan .

history

The square was known as Majisjan Apstambutjan hraparak (" May Uprising Square "), named after the failed Bolshevik uprising against the government of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation (Dashnak) of the Democratic Republic of Armenia in May 1920. The square was designed during the 1930s under Soviet rule based on plans by Alexander Tamanjan and D. Chislian .

On June 25, 2016, Pope Francis celebrated a Holy Mass on the square with the participation of Karekin II Nersissian .
