from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ghewond ( Armenian Ղևոնդ , French Ghévond , Łewond Vardapet , Zhīfūnd ), called Wardapet (Վարդապետ, "doctor"), Patmutjan (Պատմության), or Erez (երեց, Yerets, "priest") (* around 730; † around 790) was an 8th century Armenian historian. He is best known as the author of a Histoire de Ghévond , which is largely the only source on Armenia in the age of the Arab conquest.

Life

Ghewond was born around 730 in the village of Goght'n . He received his training at Dvin's seminary . He was a cleric and possibly Wardapet (doctor). He went to Constantinople to conduct his research and died around 790.

Oeuvre

Ghewond is editor of a story by Ghewond ( history of the wars and the Arab conquests in Armenia, French: Histoire des guerres et des conquêtes des Arabes en Arménie), in which he reports the conquest of Armenia by the Arabs, beginning with the death of Mohammed 632. The work originally ended with the enthronement of Catholicos Stépanos Dvnetsi ( Ստեփանոս Ա Դվնեցի) 788. The story was commissioned by Sapouh Bagratouni , the son of Sparapet Sembat VII. Bagratuni , and its main source is the work of Sebeos . According to Stepanos Orbeljan (Ստեպանոս Օրբելյան) in the 13th century, the work is incomplete today.

Traditional versions contain a letter allegedly written by the Byzantine Emperor Leo III. Isaurian (reigned 717-741.) To the Umayyad - Caliph . Umar II (ruled 717-720.) Was directed. In it an apology for the Christian faith is developed. This version is, however, a later Armenian composition.
