The Tietz department store at Schadowstrasse 43/45 in Düsseldorf was built in 1899 for the Leonhard Tietz company according to plans by the Düsseldorf architect Fritz Hofmeister . At that time, the department store was considered "the largest facility of its kind in Düsseldorf".

description

The “monumental facade made of sandstone” was kept in the style of historicism and showed “modern forms based on historical building methods.” Large shop window openings encompassed several floors and were structured by pilasters in a colossal order. The fourth floor had blind arcades. The central axis was taken up by the entrance area, crowned by a tail gable and a statue of Mercury . Through the entrance one reached a stately atrium with an impressive staircase. The atrium was surrounded by the gallery floors. On the side was the passage to Klosterstrasse and the office building, crowned by a tower-like structure. The passage was used by installing showcases. The construction costs amounted to 460,000 marks.
