After several years as a partner in the OFIM repair shop in Genoa, Max Sandmeier founded Wascosa in 1964 together with his partner Pietro Scotti and his brother-in-law Jakob Wälti in Aarau, Switzerland. Today the company is owned by the Müller / Sandmeier family.

1969/1970 new wagons were built for Wascosa in Switzerland. In 1973 Max Sandmeier moved from Genoa back to Switzerland, from where the Europe-wide development and expansion of the rental business in Switzerland, Germany , Austria and Hungary took place. In 1993 the son-in-law Philipp Müller, husband of Max Sandmeier's younger daughter, Paola, joined the Wascosa.

In 1995 the car rental company had a tank car painted by Lucerne artist Michael Koch, which was called an art tank car. In 1998 Wascosa played a key role in the introduction of tank wagons with detectors to detect derailment and was the first company in the industry to rent out mineral oil tank wagons with the EDT 100 (EDT = derailment detector ).

In close cooperation with the mineral oil industry, Wascosa developed a new, Europe-wide compatible tank car called Wascosa tank car . Over 700 wagons of this type are now in use (as of June 2013).

In 2008, the systematic entry into combined transport took place with the establishment of a fleet of more than 1200 wagons within three years. The Wascosa flex freight system was completed for the 2009 transport logistic trade fair , for which Wascosa was awarded the Zug Innovation Prize 2009 in the same year . The company has been a sponsoring member of the Pro Schiene Alliance since 2010 .

In 2010 Wascosa presented the Wascosa safe tank car, a tank wagon for the transport of dangerous goods by rail, and was the first wagon keeper in German-speaking Europe to receive the ECM certificate (Entity in Charge of Maintenance) in accordance with the provisional, since 2012 EU Regulation 445 / 2011 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the introduction of a common Europe-wide certification system for the maintenance of freight wagons. Wascosa moved from Zug to Lucerne in August 2011. At this point in time, the company operated around 5000 freight wagons and described itself as the fifth largest European wagon rental company. On August 30, 2012 Wascosa said it was once again the first wagon keeper in Europe to receive the ECM certificate in its final form in accordance with EU regulation EU 445/2011. Between 2010 and 2013, more than 700 "Wascosa Safe Tank cars" were ordered; these are supplied by the Slovakian manufacturer Tatravagónka .

In August 2018, the company announced that it would take over 4,400 freight wagons or 30 percent of the fleet of the American Nacco Group . Wascosa will take over the management of the newly acquired freight and tank wagons and integrate them into its fleet. This will increase the Wascosa fleet to over 14,000 freight wagons.
