Washington Monument (Baltimore)
The Washington Monument is a memorial on Mount Vernon Place in the Mount Vernon neighborhood of Baltimore in the US state of Maryland . It is the first significant monument in honor of George Washington .
The design of the monument comes from the American architect Robert Mills , who also designed the Washington Monument of the same name in the federal capital Washington, DC .
history
In 1813, an architecture competition was announced in Baltimore. The winner was to receive $ 500 for the construction of a monument in memory of George Washington with a budget of $ 100,000. The design by the architect Robert Mills prevailed in 1814.
Construction began with the laying of the foundation stone on July 4, 1815 as part of the Independence Day celebrations. It was completed in 1829.
Dimensions
The monument consists of a white Doric-style marble column standing 54.45 meters (178 feet and 8 inches ) high . The foundation is a gallery with a staircase. A viewing platform can be reached via a total of 227 steps.
