Eifel Water Information Center, Heimbach

The Eifel Water Info Center (WIZE) was an extracurricular learning center on the subject of water with an attached conference center in the town of Heimbach in the Eifel National Park .

The WIZE was set up in the building of the former secondary school in 1992. It was supported by the city of Heimbach, the Karl H. Krischer Foundation and a support association .

The information center not only showed the water cycle, but also the large number of dams in the Eifel, such as B. the nearby Rurtalsperre . The watercourses of the northern Eifel as well as the extraction of drinking water were shown. Groups, e.g. B. School classes could experiment with water. The process of generating electricity from hydropower was also presented and explained in the WIZE. Various fish species and the oldest eel in the city were kept in aquariums in a “blue classroom” , and there was an earthworm farm in the cellar.

In autumn 2019 the Heimbach city council had to approve the closure of the WIZE in order to relieve the budget of the current and upcoming modernization costs. In spite of around 4,000 visits a year, the facility had been operating consistently in deficit and had generated negative amounts of around 50,000 to 70,000 euros annually.
