Title and content

The full text of the title of the fourth edition (1878) reads:

“Soap and water or general laundry book, encompassing the whole practice of laundry, both for small and large households, as well as for the largest bleaching and laundry, in the careful instructions on the use of water and soap, applications in conjunction with chemical detergents and the latest machines and the largest selection of receipts. A thorough textbook, manual and indispensable aid book for the expectant and already trained laundress. With many woodcut illustrations explaining the text. Published in association with several experts by Wilhelmine Buchholz, a practical laundress. Hamburg: JP Fr. E. Richter 1874. "

The work covers all the usual laundry and care practices of the time, from preparing the right washing water and choosing the right soap to bleaching and dyeing and the agents to be used. Each item of laundry is assigned its own treatment method because colored items, semi- silks, ostrich feathers, calico , flannel and taffeta require their own cleaning methods. The book is equipped with many illustrations in which the washing, wringing, drying, ironing and flattening devices of the time are explained.

Emergence

In an autobiographical text from 1897, Stinde reports on his work for the Richter publishing house in Hamburg. It was here that the idea arose of writing a book about laundry to make up for the losses caused by another book by Stinde, Looking through the Microscope .

“The German literature lacked a book on laundry, a book that contained everything related to washing, bleaching, flattening, dyeing, cleaning, staining, both in relation to the large business and the smallest household . And I was chosen for this book. It was written and appeared on delivery. Every book must have a title. We called it "soap and water". And it must also name an author, that is, a title author; ideally an author here. While we were deliberating, the young man told the bookstore that there had long been a laundress in Hamburg who was famous for her skill, and her name was Wilhelmine Buchholz. The name was appealing and was added to the title. "Wasser und Seife" is still going under her name, and anyone who reads the article "Washing" in Meyer will find it listed at the end of the list in the literature. "

Stinde also has the title in his play The Carstens Family. Genre image used in an elevator . Ms. Carstensen arranges the Christmas table and speaks among other things:

"Christine kigt en neee Muff, en siden Schört, en witte Klapp and en Book, watt se sik all ümmer wishes hett," Wilhelmine Buchholz, water and soap or the whole of the laundry ". - Well, when ik was still young, there washed like ahn Boker and ahn son docility and created the Tüg ok. Awer Knaken belong to that date, the no-one has no more girls. "
