The flannel ( the flannel in Austria; from Celtic , Kymrisch : gwlân "wool" over French flannel and English flannel ) is a fabric . Flannels are comparatively light, but still warm and absorbent, and they are also very soft to the touch.

A distinction is made between wool flannel and cotton flannel . Wool flannels can consist of worsted or carded yarn and are mainly produced in a twill weave . They are only lightly tumbled . The wool qualities as a melange in typical flannel gray are classic . Cotton flannels, on the other hand, are napped and woven in both a plain weave and a twill weave . The pile is sanded briefly and evenly .

Flannel is mainly used to make cotton flannel shirts and woolen men's suits for the cooler seasons.
