The Schwarza moated castle is a lost moated castle in Schwarza in today's Schmalkalden-Meiningen district in Thuringia .
history
Schwarza was owned by the Counts of Henneberg in the 9th and 10th centuries . The castle built at this time served to secure the roads across the Thuringian Forest , in order to have access to the rooms around Meiningen and Rohr . The Henneberg line split, Schwarza became space for the Henneberg-Schwarza line for the administrative center of Römhild . As a result of inheritance disputes, the moated castle often changed hands. The castle of the Lords of Stolberg was built in its place between the 16th and 18th centuries . There are hardly any remains of the moated castle.
The successor building, Stolberg Castle , still exists today and is privately owned. Renovation work that had begun was interrupted in 1993 and parts of the castle fell into disrepair.
