Water sports insurance

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A water sports insurance provides coverage for water sports-related damage caused by a boat, a yacht or other pleasure craft. Basically, water sports insurance includes boat liability and / or hull insurance and / or skipper's liability insurance, which must be tailored to the individual needs of the insured.

The water sports liability

Water sports liability covers property damage, financial loss and personal injury caused by driving water sports vehicles (e.g. boats or yachts) and using water sports equipment (e.g. jet skis). A water sports liability covers in addition to the above. Damage including claims for damages that lead to the pollution of a body of water as a result of accidents. In contrast to private liability insurance, water sports liability insurance also covers damage to third parties that arise in connection with the use or possession of one's own water sports vehicle or water sports equipment. As a rule, the insurance cover is not limited to the owner, but also applies to those who are authorized or responsible to operate the water sports vehicle or water sports equipment. As a rule, water sports insurances have coverage of several million euros, so that sufficient benefits are guaranteed in the event of personal injury, property damage and environmental damage. In some countries, such as the Netherlands, Switzerland, Spain and Italy, such insurance is compulsory, although the minimum amounts insured vary. When driving in these countries you have to be in possession of proof of insurance and have it on board. Around 50,000 accidents in the water sports sector occur in the European Union every year.

The water sports comprehensive insurance

In addition to liability insurance, comprehensive insurance is part of water sports insurance. A water sports comprehensive insurance protects against damage to property caused by personal or third-party negligence, i. H. by third parties, and also covers damage caused by force majeure (e.g. lightning strike, explosions) or theft of the water sports vehicle and its accessories. Damage that occurs to the water sports enthusiast (e.g. due to an accident) is also covered. The insurance policies vary: either only the watercraft itself or the watercraft and its dinghies are insured. Risks of shipyard and winter storage are only partially assumed.

The skipper's liability insurance

A water sports liability insurance is liable for the owner of the watercraft or water sports equipment as well as for the skipper and crew. Skippers who work on a chartered boat are usually not protected. In such cases, a private skipper's liability insurance makes sense, because people who transport other people with a chartered boat assume the risk for both the person and the chartered boat itself and are accordingly fully liable. A skipper's liability insurance covers personal injury, property damage and financial loss in the millions and regulates damage that occurs within the crew, because the crew is generally considered to be a community of danger.
