Water level oak

The water level mark on the trunk of the oak

The water level oak stands in the Kellenhusener Forest in the Ostholstein district .

The oak got its name in memory of the highest storm surge of the 19th century on the night of November 12th to 13th, 1872, commonly known as the Baltic Sea storm flood of 1872 . The water level is marked on the trunk of the oak with a red dot, and on a boulder next to the oak it says “Storm surge 11/13/1872”.

There was also the royal oak (up to 1000 years old) nearby, but it no longer exists. Her mighty trunk lies on the ground, another storm was her undoing. A Danish king is said to have rested under her while passing through, hence the name.
