The five-story tower stands west of the Nikolaikirche . The massive brick tower has plastered full floors. On the gable roof , under which there are two attic levels, sits a baroque bell tower from the 18th century with two roof houses. The bell, which weighs five hundredweight, dates from 1643. The top floor has corner blocks and a tower clock . A painted imperial eagle with the coat of arms of the city of Isny can be seen on the northern outside, above the arched gate passage .

history

The water gate in 1737

The tower was first mentioned in a document in 1337. In front of the water gate, the suburb was built in the 15th century and was no longer included in the city fortifications. In the great fire of 1631, the upper part of the tower was destroyed and rebuilt in 1657.

The roof and facade were renovated in the 1950s, and extensive repairs were carried out from 1972 to 1980.

Water Gate Museum

The water gate museum was set up in the tower . You can visit the former prison. The floor directly above the passage was used as a prison. The dark dungeon gives a lasting impression of the prisoners' gloomy existence. It had an opening in the ceiling, through which the prisoner on a chair was "unwound" with the help of a rope.

The water gate used to be manned by a tower keeper, whose little room now belongs to the museum. There you can go back to the time of wars and fires while looking at the medieval city complex. The last guard's family lived in the tower until the middle of the 20th century; sanitary facilities and running water were only installed in 1940.

The other tower floors show parts of the city history collection, including a documentation about the Isny fire brigade, a shoemaker's workshop and an exhibition about the beginnings of winter sports.
