history

A cholera epidemic in Hamburg in 1892 with 8605 deaths caused the city of Hamburg to set up a central water supply with a water tower in the Ritzebüttel office , in Cuxhaven and in Döse in order to avoid infectious diseases and to supply the ships in the port.

The 48 meter high water tower from 1897 with a storage tank and a waterworks was built and operated by the Berlin entrepreneur and engineer Hoffmann. The seven-storey tower, at that time in the outer dike area, has 80 centimeter thick walls that had to support a weight of 900 tons.
From 1970 onwards, the pressure on the gradient was insufficient for the higher buildings, so that they had to be equipped with pressure boosting systems. In 2004 the water tower was taken out of service. Four apartments were built into the tower. A café and a seminar room are to be set up in the tower that was sold in 2013 or 2017. The tower is a symbol of the city.

Note: The water tower Cuxhaven- Lüdingworth from 1951 stands outside the city center of Cuxhaven and was in operation until 1967. It was then converted into a holiday home.
