The water tower of the former dairy factory in Radolfzell on Güttinger Strasse was still in its original form in 2010. The building erected in 1956 was completely changed after a redesign.

Original structure

The simple tower, polygonal in plan, was 31 m high. The shaft had four floors (including the first floor) with a central staircase. The tower head, the casing of the container, barely protruded, but was separated from the shaft by a cornice . The steel container inside was removed before the upcoming redesign. Immediately under the roof there was a row of small windows surrounding the head. A flat, protruding tent roof closed off the building at the top.

History

The Radolfzell dairy factory built the building in 1956 for the company's water supply. As early as 1979, the company no longer needed the tower and shut it down. For a long time there was no possible use. In 2002 the city put the tower up for sale, and a local building contractor bought it for € 25,000.

Remodeling and further use

The tower was converted into the first zero-energy passive high-rise in the world and has housed an extraordinary design hotel since April 2017. The project was funded by the Federal Environment Ministry as a demonstration system. Since the water tower was not under monument protection , extensive renovation measures that completely changed the building fabric could be implemented. The old, ailing tower head was completely dismantled and replaced by several cantilevered floors. On the north side, a separate elevator and stair tower opens up the actual hotel tower. The foundation of the new building, which is also intended as a water basin with waterfalls, to commemorate its original use, was poured in 2008.
