The Wat Chedi Yot Thong ( Thai : วัด เจดีย์ ยอด ทอง , also for short: Wat Chedi Thong ) is a Buddhist temple complex ( Wat ) in Phitsanulok , Northern Thailand .

location

Wat Chedi Yot Thong is located on Phaya Suea Road not far from the east bank of the Mae Nam Nan (Nan River) . A little further to the east, at the end of the road, is Wat Aranyik .

The old city walls of Phitsanulok, as far as they can still be guessed today, either formed a square with Wat Chedi Yot Thong in the center, or a rectangle, on the east-west axis of which the temple was located slightly to the west. In any case, it is the likely location of the city's main temple.

Building history

The exact founding date of Wat Chedi Yot Thong is unknown. Based on the inscription VIII (III / 13) it can be assumed that King Li Thai (Thai: พญา ลิ ไท , also Maha Thammaracha I) had the Chedi Yot Thong restored in the 1360s, long before Wat Mahathat was founded.

Attractions

Wat Chedi Yot Thong is the only temple in Phitsanulok that still has an original 20 meter high chedi , the tip of which has the shape of a lotus bud, as was typical of the Sukhothai period . On the site there are buildings for monks ( kuti ) , which are located by a small lotus pond. Another building that still exists today is from more recent times.
