Wat Chonthara Singhe

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Wat Chon Thara Singhe ( Thai วัด ชล ธารา สิง เห ) is a Buddhist temple complex ( Wat ) in Amphoe (district) Tak Bai , Narathiwat Province .

location

Wat Chon Thara Singhe is located on Road 4985 (Narathiwat-Tak Bai) near the intersection at Tak Bai Market in Tambon Chehe. From here you can get to the island of Ko Yao, among other places.

The temple is located in the middle of the predominantly Muslim district of Tak Bai. In 1909 the location of the temple determined the border between the British colonial empire and the Kingdom of Siam. This successfully asserted that the Buddhist temple and the surrounding area should not be added to the Muslim Malaya, but to the Buddhist Siam. The temple therefore bears the name Wat Phithak Phaen Din Thai, "Temple that protects the sovereignty of the Thai".

Building history

Wat Chon Thara Singhe was built in 1873 on the initiative of the Buddhist monk Phra Kru Ophat Phuttakhun , who asked the governor of Kelantan to provide suitable building land, who at the time ruled Tak Bai from British-Malay territory. The style is a mix of traditional Thai and Sumatran styles.
