Wataru Asō

Wataru Asō ( Japanese 麻 生 渡 , Asō Wataru ; born May 15, 1939 in Tobata , Fukuoka Prefecture (now the Tobata-ku of Kitakyūshū )) was the independent governor of the Japanese prefecture of Fukuoka from 1995 to 2011 . From 2005 to 2011 he was also President of the “National Governors' Conference” .

Asō studied at the University of Kyoto and was then a civil servant at MITI . In the meantime he worked for the Foreign Office in London, from 1992 he headed the patent office for two years . In 1995 he successfully ran for the first time in the gubernatorial elections of Fukuoka and has since been confirmed three times. Most recently, he prevailed in the unified regional elections in 2007 against Shūji Inatomi, supported by the DPJ and SDP , with 1.12 million to 666,000 votes. In 2011 Asō withdrew, Hiroshi Ogawa was elected as his successor .
