Venue of the 1955 European Rowing Championships |
The Nationale Watersportbaan Georges Nachez , or Watersportbaan for short , is an artificial lake in the Belgian city of Ghent , which has been used as a regatta course for canoeing and rowing since 1954 .
history
In preparation for the European Rowing Championships in 1955 , the Watersportbaan was built as part of an urbanization project in the west of Ghent.
The Watersportbaan is integrated into the region's water transport system. A tributary of the Leie flows through the regatta basin.
The International Regatta van Sport Gent (English Ghent May Regatta ) has been held on the Watersportbaan since 1954 and is one of the most important annual rowing events in the Benelux region.
properties
The Watersportbaan consists of a pool 2300 m long and 76 m wide.
Five lanes are available for rowing competitions. In addition, the facility does not have a separate training track. This means that the Watersportbaan no longer meets the highest requirement class that the FISA world rowing association specifies for international rowing regattas.
The bank is paved for the last 250 m and partially provided with concrete steps for spectators.
A running track with a length of 4967 m was laid out around the Watersportbaan.
