The book is about the events around the destruction of a family house by a young gang. The family's daughter, 14-year-old Karen Jerome, is pushed down into the basement during this aggressive act and then falls into a coma .

The crime thriller is told from several perspectives . From the perspective of 16-year-old Jane, who is Karen's sister, and her little brother, Artie. The perspective of the rioter Buddy Walker also flows into the novel. Another person who acts as the narrator is "The Avenger" (the avenger). He watched the break-in and wants retribution for the crime.

An attentive friend of the family tells the family the number of the license plate on a rioter's car, and one of the people involved, Harry Flowers, can be caught. However, Harry remains silent about the other three members of the group who were involved in the crime. In particular, these are Buddy, Marty Sanders and Randy Pierce. Out of curiosity, Buddy starts stalking Jane and they fall in love. Buddy hopes Karen will not wake up from the coma, since she has seen all the rioters and could recognize them at any time. Harry Flowers is released for lack of evidence. He says that Jane gave him the house key, but she just lost it and he puts it in his pocket. The avenger is a mentally disturbed person who has already “avenged” several enemies by killing them. He thinks he is 11 years old even though he is an adult. He is in love with Jane Jerome; However, when he realizes that she has fallen in love with one of the rioters, he plans to kill her too. Karen has now awakened from the coma, but she has lost all memory of the incident that put her in a coma. The Avenger, finally lures Jane into a tree house to kill her, but Jane is able to influence him so that he kills himself . During the conversation she had learned that Buddy was also involved in the act of destruction. They see each other one last time in their room, in which, on the day of the terrible crime, he was standing with a bottle of alcohol and devastating the whole room, and she separates from him.
