We Are the Champions is a song by the rock band Queen . It was released on October 7, 1977 along with We Will Rock You as a double A-side from the News of the World album. Even on later compilation albums , the two songs are usually consecutive. Although it achieved relatively little commercial success when it was first released (No. 13 in Germany, No. 13 in Austria, No. 2 in Great Britain, No. 4 in the USA), it is one of the band's most famous songs.

history

The play was written by Freddie Mercury . It tried to get the audience to sing along. Brian May described it as "very unifying and positive." People loved it because it was so "uplifting."

2001 Brian May and Roger Taylor recorded a version of the song with Robbie Williams for the film Knight from Passion . In 2020 a version with Adam Lambert followed under the title You are the Champions, on the occasion of the corona pandemic.

occupation

reception

In September 2011, a team of scientists from London named the song the “catchiest pop song of all time”. Several thousand test persons were observed for this purpose.

In 2014 the song was used commercially for the Audi A3 commercial .

After complaints arose that American presidential candidate Donald Trump used the song in his election campaign, Brian banned May from using the song in his election campaign. ("We have always resisted using Queen's music as a campaign tool" - Brian May )
