Webseed

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As Webseed (HTTP / FTP seeding) is generally refers to the use of Web servers that in peer-to-peer are used networks for distributing files. Here you make use of the mostly large bandwidth and good accessibility. In the case of older or less popular files, downloading via FTP or HTTP may be preferable due to the insufficient number of uploaders, since a secure completion of the download may be more likely than via the peer-to-peer network. This disadvantage can be overcome by using webseeds.

This type of file sharing is particularly widespread in the BitTorrent network, introduced in the BitTorrent client BitTornado . BitTorrent Enhancement Proposals (BEP) 17 and 19 describe the procedures for using HTTP or FTP web servers as complete sources (seeds) in the BitTorrent swarm.

The term webseed has grown historically in the P2P community and currently mostly refers to servers that are connected to the Internet particularly quickly, but do not offer files via HTTP or FTP, but conventionally via BitTorrent protocol. The BitTornado client software is usually used for this and is controlled with a web interface .
