Wedge Tomb from Goakstown
The Wedge Tomb of Goakstown (also Ault and Gowkstown - locally also called Giant's Grave) is located on a southwest slope, south of Glenarm near Larne in County Antrim in Northern Ireland . Wedge Tombs ( German "Keilgräber" , formerly also called "wedge-shaped gallery grave") are double-walled, aisle-free, mostly undivided megalithic buildings from the late Neolithic and early Bronze Age in Ireland.
description
The well-preserved southwest-northeast-oriented wedge grave still has 25 closely standing curb stones, part of its cairn and a large capstone. A slab about 1.2 m high, probably intentionally broken off at one corner, separates the rectangular front from the main chamber. The visible structure is the double outer walls. These stones made from local sandstone accentuate the wedge shape of the monument and rise from back to front. The largest stone is 1.6 m high and 1.5 m wide. The antechamber has a straight facade and the chamber is made of large stones with a lintel . The Wedge Tomb is about 10.0 m long, 5.0 m at the front and about 4.0 m wide at the rear. The gallery is a little more than 1.0 m wide. A facade stone stands in front of the entrance.
300 meters in Glenarm Valley is the counsel of Deer Park Farms . 3.8 km southeast, near Ballygilbert Hill, is the 1.5 meter high phallic menhir Cloughhogan. The 437 m high volcanic cone of the Slemish dominates the horizon.
