The approximately 25,000 inhabitants live mainly from agriculture and fishing. There is hardly any industry on the island. Weh has a port in Sabang, which was built under the Dutch colonial power and was one of the most important in the region until World War II . From 1965 to 1985 Weh was a free trade area . Since September 1st, 2000 the port of Sabang has been a free port again. Due to Pulau Weh's good location on the Strait of Malacca , a declaration of conformity was signed on November 5, 2006 between the Indonesian provincial administration of Aceh and the Dublin Port Company.
