The approximately 25,000 inhabitants live mainly from agriculture and fishing. There is hardly any industry on the island. Weh has a port in Sabang, which was built under the Dutch colonial power and was one of the most important in the region until World War II . From 1965 to 1985 Weh was a free trade area . Since September 1st, 2000 the port of Sabang has been a free port again. Due to Pulau Weh's good location on the Strait of Malacca , a declaration of conformity was signed on November 5, 2006 between the Indonesian provincial administration of Aceh and the Dublin Port Company. The Dublin Port Company wants to develop the Sabang free port into one of the largest container ports in Asia.
