Wei Boyang ( Chinese  魏伯陽  /  魏伯阳 , Pinyin Wèi Bóyáng ) was a legendary Daoist immortal in China who is said to have lived in the 2nd century.

According to tradition, Wei Boyang is said to have been called to the imperial court in 121, but to have refused an office. In the tradition of Daoism, he is said to have withdrawn to the mountains in search of the elixir of immortality.

Wei Boyang is considered to be the author of the Santongqi ( 參 同 契  /  叁 同 契 , sāntóngqì  - "about relationship of the three or threefold correspondence"), a classic of internal alchemy , which cannot be dated with certainty, but to which many texts of internal alchemy To refer to. The Santongqi is considered to be the earliest written evidence of Chinese alchemy .

The highly symbolic work, which uses an abundance of images and metaphors, was understood in the history of inner alchemy as a way to develop inner strength, which acted as a mystical elixir in the body of the adept. It contains instructions on Daoist meditation , through which the adept should understand the workings of Yin and Yang and make use of them. This process is illustrated in the Santongqi by the trigrams and hexagrams of Yijing . The pure yang elixir, through which life is supposed to be restored, is to be created by observing the microcosmic and macrocosmic cycles in order to attain the one, the Dao . In addition to the speculation of the Yijing play in Santongqi the numerology , the Chinese calendar and scientific knowledge of the time involved.

However, the text is not only a guide to meditation, but also describes the attitude of inaction, the Wu Wei , without which the goal cannot be achieved according to the Taoist teaching and in part the text also deals with the basics of Chinese medicine .
