The Weiherspiele Markt Schwaben (initially Weiherfestspiele ) is an open-air theater event that has been taking place every summer in Markt Schwaben ( Ebersberg district ) since 1984 - with the exception of 1992 and 2017 . It is played on several lake stages that are being built on the Schwabener Kirchweiher market , with singing and dancing. The spectators sit on stone steps and specially built stands. The performances are particularly impressive because of the backdrops and the lighting that is reflected in the pond.

The performances usually take place in the summer months of June, July and / or August, Thursday to Saturday from 8 p.m. at dusk. The catch-up date for a performance that is canceled due to the weather is usually the following Monday or Tuesday.

history

The stage of 2018

Founded in 1984 by Josef Schmid, Siegfried Schmidt, amateur actors, songwriters and volunteers (for example for the setting of the scenery), the Weiherspiele were an insider tip in the east of Munich when it came to open-air theater until the finally resounding success story Die Fösche in the summer of 1990. In 1987 the theater association Markt Schwaben was founded. From the 1988 season onwards, the steadily growing number of visitors and the growing interest of the media ( Bavarian television reported for the first time) made the sets and costumes more and more elaborate and professional. Ticket sales, numbered seats and additional grandstands have been available since 1990. In 2007, additional concrete stone steps were set into the slope on the steep western bank of the pond . At its peak, 20,000 spectators could be counted in one season.

Siegfried Schmidt, Hermann Bogenrieder, Elke Deuringer, Maurizio Cecchin, Gerhard Rackl and Ewald Stolze are considered veterans, companions and supporters. For 31 years, Josef Schmid, from Schwaben, was director, artistic director and author. Fritz Humpelmayr took over the game management for 2016. After this year with moderate success, the decision was made not to hold any Weiherspiele in 2017 in order to realign the open-air games conceptually and to rearrange responsibilities. Josef Schmid resigned as chairman at the general meeting of the theater association in early 2017. Franz Stetter (1st chairman) and Ferdinand Maurer (2nd chairman) were elected as successors. Maurer has been in charge of the game since 2018. In 2020 the pond games were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic .
