Viticulture in Slovakia is mainly carried out in the south on the border with Hungary and in the west along the border with the Czech Republic . The vineyard area in Slovakia was around 28,300 hectares in 2000.

Areas

There are the wine regions Malokarpatská vinohradnícka oblasť (north of Bratislava ), Small Carpathians in the west of the country, Južnoslovenská vinohradnícka oblasť east of Bratislava, in the south of the country, Nitrianska vinohradnícka oblasť (Neutra) also in the south, Stredoslovenská vinohradnícka oblasť (central Slovakia), Východoslovenská vinohradnícka oblasť in the east around the city of Košice , and Tokajská vinohradnícka oblasť , the Tokaj wine region in the southeast.

Traditional terms according to Regulation (EC) No. 401/2010 Article 40

"Mladé víno" is a Slovak wine of guaranteed origin. The wine must be bottled before the end of the calendar year in which the grapes used for winemaking were harvested. The wine may be marketed from the first Monday in November of the same harvest year .

"Archívne víno" is a Slovak wine of guaranteed origin. The wine is aged for at least three years after the grapes used to make the wine have been harvested.

"Panenská úroda" is a Slovak wine of guaranteed origin. The grapes used for production come from the first harvest of a vineyard. The first harvest is that of the third or, at the latest, fourth year after planting.
