Wels-Rohrer Railway

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Wels-Rohrer-Bahn (also called "Welserbahn" in the Kremsmünster area) was a local railway from Wels Hbf. Via Sattledt to Rohr in the Kremstal . The approx. 25 km long railway line was built by the Localbahn-Gesellschaft Wels-Aschach (from 1894: "Welser Localbahngesellschaft") on the basis of the concession document of January 12, 1892, for the local railway from Wels to Unter-Rohr. built. The opening took place in 1893. The line had the function of connecting the city of Wels on the one hand with the Kremstal (Linz-Klaus line of the "Kremstalbahn-Gesellschaft"), on the other hand with Steyr (via the Rohr-Bad Hall line of the "Kremstalbahngesellschaft" and the narrow-gauge Bad Hall-Steyr line of the "Steyrtalbahngesellschaft").

However, due to conflicts of interest between the private companies involved, this structure could not develop fruitfully. Rather, there was a wage war on the question of whether freight should be transported from the Kremstal via Linz or via Wels to the north. The "Welser Localbahngesellschaft" was at a disadvantage, not least because of the less favorable route of its route through the hill country, and was therefore forced to build a more successful line branching off the Rohrerbahn into the Almtal (di Sattledt - Grünau im Almtal , " Almtalbahn ") ( concession document from June 3, 1899 for the local railway from Sattledt to Grünau. ), Whose economic structure was very similar to that of the Kremstal at that time. The standard gauge connection with Steyr dropped the "Welser Localbahngesellschaft" altogether.

In 1942 the railway was nationalized. In 1965 the section of the Sattledt pipe was abandoned by the ÖBB after only modest passenger traffic was last up until 1964, e.g. Sometimes, however, with continuous trains from Wels via Rohr to Bad Hall. The line was removed by the mid-1970s. Remains of the substructure can still be seen in the landscape today.

Strictly speaking, the "Wels-Rohrer Railway" still extends to Sattledt today. The name "Almtalbahn" has long been established for the Wels-Sattledt-Grünau line in the Almtal.
