World ABC

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The World ABC is a freinet Educational Internet project at the elementary school Ortnergasse in Vienna for migrant children , with whom she the German language learning. In 2007 the website won the Austrian State Multimedia Award and the Europrix Top Talent Award 2007. The site was developed by Freinet educator Christian Schreger and enables children to find their own access to the German language.

The project emerged from the work with the migrant class at the Storchengrundschule in Ortnergasse in Vienna. German terms (vocabulary, e.g. flower) are not 'crammed' in the conventional way, but are compiled by the children themselves in a variety of ways with images, audio for pronunciation of the terms, verbs, adjectives, nouns and explanations on a database-supported website. All contributions come exclusively from the children and do not follow any didactic concept. Ch. Schreger rather follows the motto of the reform pedagogue Célestin Freinet : "Give the children the floor." The German language is learned not only through the terms and their association, but also in the children's discussions in German about which words and images are selected for the website. By linking to the photos for each term that the children take in themselves, the children's world becomes the starting point for learning.

The children's lessons are consistently geared towards the learning of the individual children. The project links the principles of Freinet pedagogy with neurological findings in relation to learning, with radical-constructivist perspectives and a mathematical perspective.
