World Council for Sports Science and Physical Education
The World Council for Sport Science and Physical Education ( international abbreviations: ICSSPE - International Council of Sport Science and Physical Education ; CIEPSS - Conseil International pour l´Education Physique et la Science du Sport ) sees itself as an international umbrella organization for sport science, des Sports and school sports that aim to promote better quality of life and health through physical activity and sport, as well as laws and guidelines that promote an active lifestyle, performance and good governance.

The first international sports science associations already existed before the First World War . In the early days, it was mainly sports medicine specialists who contributed to the science of sport. In 1956, Fritz Duras organized the Science Congress on the occasion of the Summer Olympics , which attracted 350 participants from all five continents. They decided to found a world association for sports science and commissioned Duras to prepare it. The German-Australian sports physician of Jewish origin, who had to emigrate to Australia in 1937, became the founding president. The World Council, which still exists today, was then founded in Paris in 1958 with the support of UNESCO. Since then, the organization has been legally registered with UNESCO . Well-known athletes and scientists acted as honorary presidents, such as Nobel Peace Prize laureate Philip Noel-Baker , the former world-class athlete Roger Bannister and the head of the Federal Institute for Sports Science August Kirsch . The original name "International Council of Sport and Physical Education (ICSPE)" was expanded to include "Sport Science" in 1982. 290 organizations and institutions from more than 60 countries are currently members of the World Council.
structure
The highest body of the World Council is the general assembly, which takes place every two years.
The board of directors elected by the general assembly according to § 26 BGB functions for four years. It consists of a president, three vice-presidents and a treasurer.
The headquarters of the office is in Germany (Friesenhaus I, Hans-Braun-Straße 14053 Berlin ). Detlef Dumon has been the managing director since 2007.

Fields of work
The basic concern is a future-oriented worldwide coordination of sport, sport science and physical education. The work of the World Council takes place in the following areas, each of which is coordinated by a Vice President:
- Development, coordination and integration of the sports science disciplines
- Promote innovative and multidisciplinary research in sports science
- Promotion of physical activity, physical education and sport and practical use of related scientific knowledge.
International cooperation
The World Council is a permanent advisory body to UNESCO . There is also cooperation with the IOC , the WHO and various national sports administrations.
