history

The term “Wemyss” is an Anglicization from Scottish Gaelic uamh for “cave” and refers to the caves in the cliff below the property, which has been owned by the Wemyss clan since the 12th century . A defense structure at the site was destroyed by Edward I's troops. In 1423 there was a castle of John Wemyss of Reres near West Wemyss. Since 1428 at the latest, the family had coal mined, which, in addition to the salt production established later, formed the basis of their prosperity. David Wemyss obtained the establishment of a barony from Jacob IV in 1511 , the center of which was the castle. Around this time the building was expanded. In 1565, Queen Mary of Scots met her future husband Henry Stuart for the first time at Wemyss Castle .

In 1633, John Wemyss was installed as the first Earl of Wemyss . Over the following centuries, Wemyss Castle was expanded and revised several times. The defense structure was gradually transformed into a mansion with outbuildings. Due to his role in the Battle of Culloden, David Wemyss, 6th Earl of Wemyss, forfeited his property. The Earldom was separated from the lands under Charles I in the middle of the 18th century , so that the Earls of Wemyss now reside in Gosford House .
