history

The settlement goes back to the Wemyss Castle of the Wemyss clan , which John Wemyss of Reres had built there before 1423. David Wemyss obtained the establishment of a barony from Jacob IV in 1511 , the center of which was the castle. In 1633, John Wemyss was installed as the first Earl of Wemyss . The Earldom was separated from the lands in the middle of the 18th century under Charles I , so that the Earls of Wemyss now reside at Gosford House .

In 1511 West Wemyss became a Burgh of Barony . The Wemyss' operated a port there and went about the salt production. Coal mining, which was already being pursued in the area, later gained importance in West Wemyss. In the second half of the 19th century, a large part of the population lived from coal mining. The port used for transhipment was supplemented by a dry dock in 1872. The village with its workers' houses was protected as an ensemble in 1985.

While 858 people lived in West Wemyss in 1831, the number rose to 1231 within forty years. After 545 inhabitants were counted in West Wemyss in 1961, the number of inhabitants is declining. In 1991 there were still 200 people living there
