The Wendelinusturm in Bad Friedrichshall-Jagstfeld in the district of Heilbronn in northern Baden-Württemberg is the preserved tower of the former Catholic parish church of the village , which was consecrated to Saint Wendelin .

history

The Wendelinus Church was Jagstfeld's original parish church and was located in the immediate vicinity of the Old Town Hall. The right of patronage was initially with the Bishop of Worms, from 1392 with the Grecken von Kochendorf . The worship service was performed by clergymen from Wimpfen am Berg , then by Dominicans. From 1633 Jagstfeld belonged to the church of Wimpfen im Tal, where the cemetery for the Jagstfelder was located near the Cornelienkirche . In 1759 Jagstfeld was a branch of Offenau , and from 1879 there was a separate parish .

The church was renovated several times, including by Franz Häffele in 1752 , most recently in 1878. The building with the tower faced east, the main entrance was in the west gable of the nave. Windows and entrances were arched, the nave had a slightly arched ceiling. Next to the main altar there were two side altars consecrated to St. Mary and St. Sebastian. The tower, the basement of which goes back to a very old predecessor, is square below, tapers to an octagonal floor plan on the top floor and ends with a slate-covered dome.

When the Wendelinus Church became too small for the growing community, efforts began in 1919 to build a new Catholic church in Jagstfeld. When numerous Catholic expellees and refugees came to Bad Friedrichshall after the Second World War, building a new church became inevitable. The new Church of the Resurrection was built only around 100 meters southeast of the old church from 1953 to 1957 according to plans by the Schorndorf architect Fritz Vogt and consecrated in May 1957. Then the Wendelinuskirche was demolished except for the tower that is still today.
