Wendell P. Kay
Wendell Palmer Kay (born August 17, 1913 in Illinois , † June 29, 1986 ) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ).
Career
Kay, a lawyer, was a member of the House of Representatives in the Alaska Territory from 1951 to 1956 . There he represented the 3rd district and was the speaker of the house during his last term of office (1955-1956) . He was also a deputy delegate of the Alaska Territory during the 1956 Democratic National Convention and a full delegate of the State of Alaska to the 1960s Convention.
After US Senator Bob Bartlett , a Democrat, died in office in 1968, Republican Governor Walter Hickel named Republican Ted Stevens as his successor. Therefore, a by-election was held in 1970 for Bartlett's remaining term. Kay ran as a candidate against Stevens and was defeated with 59.6% against 40.4%. Ted Stevens held this seat until 2009.
