In connection with the introduction of direct mail in order to make the use of advertising mail easier and cheaper, a type of mail was introduced from April 1, 1938, initially on a trial basis, which was given the name "Advertising Response". Ordinary letters and printed matter up to 20 grams , as well as postcards, were permitted. They had to be printed with the remark “Advertising reply”, the address of the recipient and the request “Do not postage, fee pays recipient”. Approval had to be obtained from the delivery post office before shipping. At least 500 items were required for the first shipment, and there was no upper or lower limit for postings. The commercial replies were treated like other post-paid programs. The postage fee was only the normal postage plus a fixed surcharge of 1 pfennig for printed matter, 2 pfennigs for postcards and 3 pfennigs for letters.

On December 15, 1942, the advertising response service for the duration of the war was discontinued. A transitional period until February 28, 1943 was granted for ongoing campaigns. After the war, the service was resumed on April 1, 1948.

In January 2006 the fee for machine-readable addresses was nothing, 25 cents for non-machine-readable addresses in national and international traffic , the postage fee for “international advertising” is 70 cents (regardless of the format selected).
