The navigable Werbellink Canal (WbK) connects the Werbellinsee with the Oder-Havel Canal and the Finow Canal . It is part of the 17 km long federal waterway Werbelliner Gewässer (10 km Werbelliner See and 7 km Werbellink Canal) as a side water of the Havel-Oder-Wasserstraße (HOW). The section north of the HOW is designated with the waterway class I. The Eberswalde Waterways and Shipping Office is responsible .

As early as 1609, the Werbellinsee was tapped over the Nettelgraben to feed the first Finow Canal. The extension to the Werbellink Canal took place in 1765 in order to improve the water supply of the second Finow Canal , which was completed in 1746 . The withdrawal of water resulted in a drop in the water level in the Werbellinsee. The canal overcomes the gradient to the Oder-Havel Canal through the canal steps Eichhorst and Rosenbeck and is used in dry times - like the Finow Canal in the past - to supplement the apex of the Havel-Oder waterway and otherwise for recreational shipping.

The Oder-Havel Canal, completed in 1914, runs here one kilometer north of the Finow Canal, which is why the Werbellink Canal now joins it north of Marienwerder . The 3.15 km long section of the canal, which lies southwest of the Oder-Havel Canal, was used as other federal inland waterway for a length of 400 m until 2011. The remaining 2.73 km were backfilled in the 1920s and 1930s and then used for agriculture.

As part of the North Brandenburg water tourism initiative (WIN) funded by the state of Brandenburg , this section was restored between September 2008 and June 2011 at a cost of 4.5 million euros in order to give water tourism the opportunity to travel the distance between Werbellinsee and Finow Canal without using the much to be able to cover the traveled Oder-Havel Canal. In 2015, however, the section of the canal was closed to shipping. According to the responsible State Environment Agency, the stability of the canal embankments was impaired due to damage to the embankments and bottom, so that urgent repairs were necessary for clearance. The final reopening then took place in February 2019.
