from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Werewere-Liking Gnepo (born May 1, 1950 in Bondè , Cameroon ) is a Cameroonian writer and artist who lives in the Ivory Coast .

Life

Werewere-Liking was brought up by her paternal grandparents according to the tradition of the Bassa people . She has lived in Ivory Coast since 1975. Here she made a name for herself as a collaborator at the “Institut de littérature et d'esthétique négro-africaines” at the University of Abidjan , primarily through her research on the tradition and aesthetics of Sub-Saharan Africa (including puppets , statues and the Kaydara story ).

Since the 1980s she was - alongside Marie-José Hourantier - significantly involved in the renewal of the aesthetics of ritual theater.

In 1985 she founded the village of Ki-Yi M'Bock in Abidjan. In Bassa, their mother tongue, Ki-Yi M'Bock means something like "knowledge that exceeds all knowledge". Today around 50 African artists of various ages, origins and artistic directions find a home in this village. According to Werewere-Liking, the artist community Ki-Yi M'bock should "un mouvement pour la renaissance des arts africains, pour la naissance d'une culture panafricaine contemporaine et pour une rencontre et une reconnaissance des cultures du monde noir" (a Movement for the rebirth of the African arts, for the birth of a contemporary pan-African culture and for the encounter and recognition of the cultures of the black world).

Werewere-Liking is an extremely diverse artist (writer, painter, director, etc.). Undoubtedly, her plays and her commitment to the artists' village of Ki-Yi have established her international reputation.

In 2005 , Werewere-Liking received the prestigious Noma Prize for African Literature for her “chant-roman” La mémoire amputée .
