Noma Prize for African Literature
The Noma Prize for African Literature ( Japanese 野 間 ア フ リ カ 出版 賞 , Noma Afurika Shuppanshō , English Noma Award for Publishing in Africa / French Le Prix Noma de Publication en Afrique ) was founded in 1979 by the Japanese publisher Shōichi Noma and held annually from 1980 to 2009 awarded to African writers and scholars whose work has been published in Africa. The award was endowed with 10,000 US dollars and was supported by the Japanese publishing house Kōdansha . It was awarded for an outstanding new publication in one of the three following categories:
- scientific or academic work
- Children's book
- literary work
The work could be written in either an African or a European language.
After 30 years of generous support from the Noma family, the last award was given in 2009 to the Nigerian writer Sefi Atta .
