Mongane Wally Serote
Mongane Wally Serote (* 1944 in Sophiatown , Johannesburg ) is a South African writer .
Life
From 1974 to 1979 he was in the USA , where he studied at Columbia University . After a brief return to South Africa, he voluntarily went into exile in Botswana , where he worked for the ANC . In 1980 he received the award for the best South African writer, from 1983 to 1986 he was chairman of the Department of Arts and Culture (German about: Kulturabteilung) of the ANC. 1986–1990 he was the ANC's cultural attaché for the United Kingdom and Europe before returning to South Africa after a total of 17 years in exile.
In 1993 he received the Noma Prize for African Literature for Third World Express . In 2007 he was awarded the Silver Order of Ikhamanga .
