As Running dog one is Fries referred to the on beating itself waves recalls. It is the rounded modification of the meander .

The scientific term for the running dog is Vitruvian Veloute, named after the Roman architectural theorist Vitruv from the first century AD, or Figura serpentinata, which refers to the snake-like shape.

Like other meander shapes , this frieze is used as a wallpaper pattern , border or inlaid in classicist furniture. As an exterior home ornament, the running dog is rarely used.
