Independent vehicle workshops can join a workshop concept or workshop system that is controlled and managed by a central service provider or provider. As part of a contractual relationship, the workshops must meet certain requirements and pay a system fee. The providers of workshop concepts primarily include parts and accessories dealers, some of which were initiated by the automobile manufacturers . The providers provide the workshops with specialist knowledge and a uniform appearance (in the sense of a corporate identity ) and enable training in different areas.

Distinction

There are different forms of workshop concepts. Basically, the following two forms can be distinguished:

  • Detail system - limited support for the workshop by the provider and concentration only on certain vehicle components
Mechanics workshop concepts
Accident management
Body and paint specialists
Tire specialists
Electrical and electronics specialists
Climate specialists
Auto glass specialists
Smart repair
Specialist stores
Fast fit chains
  • Full service system - comprehensive support for the workshop from the provider

properties

The rapid development of vehicles makes it more difficult for workshops to operate in the market. The necessary know-how to be able to maintain and repair vehicles is increasingly extensive. Therefore it is hardly possible for independent workshops to be competitive in all operational areas without external support. Among other things, they are supported by workshop systems in the procurement of technical information, through numerous training courses, marketing measures and the fast and comprehensive supply of spare parts and workshop equipment. There are systems on the market that work with their own brand identity as well as systems that are not signaled. The designation as a master workshop and the system logo should make it clear that independent workshops also have corresponding quality standards.

Brand-related businesses also rely on a workshop system in addition to their manufacturer's brand. Not only the high investments, the brand-related companies and the like. a. for structural and personnel requirements of the vehicle manufacturer, are decisive. The increasing number of network redundancies a few years ago caused uncertainty among brand companies. In addition, they too are faced with the problem of not being able to access the relevant information from their manufacturer when repairing or purchasing third-party vehicles. However, according to a study by wolk after sales experts, only 10–25% of concept entrepreneurs have good purchase loyalty towards the concept operator and follow the general concept policy.

There are 381 workshop systems in Europe (as of 2011). These maintain around 100,000 outlets for car workshops, bodywork & paint, tires, car glass as well as specialist stores and fast fitters. In other words: 22% of all workshops in Europe are connected to a workshop concept. In Europe around 27% of all vehicle workshops are tied to a workshop concept. The concept connection rate of the specialized workshops is different. Tire (50%) and car glass workshops (66%) show a higher rate, whereas body and paint workshops have the lowest rate at 10%.

Only 25 of the 381 workshop systems are represented in at least four European countries with a total of 29,400 workshops. The largest European workshop concept is Bosch Car Service with over 6000 workshops in all European countries.
